3/14 - 3/20 in review

In review, this week had a number of ups ...that kind of halted for us around the time of St. Patty's Day. (We apologize for our daily readers who were left longing for posts on Thursday and Friday).

For starters, the "Movement!" line-up has begun to take shape and a number of artists have been accepted so far. To date, artists will be participating from Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Maryland, Michigan and Washington DC. Still, we've extended our proposal deadline for applications, due to the sheer interest that has been building with the exhibition. So, we'd officially like to send a respectful "Thank You!" to all of you who have helped spread the word about this exciting venture of ours.

Aside from the exhibition build up, we also had a few extremely important meetings regarding our community arts center and a couple other major Cincinnati projects this week...

The meetings started on Wednesday when we agreed to  bounce ideas around with the local, creative powerhouse Artworks. More specifically, Sarah Corlett, a "newish" member of the Artworks team (but long-time art organizer), is currently developing some exciting programming for artists in and around the city ...so we were happy to lend our ears and ideas. Primarily, Sarah's in the midst of developing an educational program that will be geared towards helping teach young, creative, entrepreneurs (like ourselves) some of the important aspects of structuring their businesses early on, to avoid failure. Essentially, her program will provide artists/fellow-creatives a bit of a business-blueprint covering items such as legal concerns, tax advice, business plan structuring, and many other components that are needed for initial success. Plus, her program looks like it will be a great forum for creatives to bounce ideas off one another and build strong networks! Because, as we all know, it takes a village...

Aside from our primary discussions with Artworks, we also had a chance to meet their director, Tamara Harkavy**, and hear about an exciting project involving box-trucks and a temporary/pop-up business disctrict in the city. This project is still in it's infant stages, but we've agreed to help out in any way they may need us ...so we really hope the project takes shape, as it seems like it would be a great thing for the city!

**On a side note: We were recommended (and thoroughly enjoyed since) the movie Waste Land. It's playing locally for a few more days, so check it out if you have a chance. It's quite the feel-good movie ...and revolves around positivity of both fine arts and recycling! Here's the trailer.

Another important meeting of the week was with the founders of local, dance-collaborative, Pones Inc. These ladies have an eerily similar mission to ours, so we took great joy in learning more about them. Without a doubt, Cincinnati will soon hear more about the group as they continue making their mark on the city. And if you weren't already aware, the group was featured on the cover of this week's City Beat newspaper (this post's opening image) ...so pick a copy or two while you still have a chance! With that, to say the least, we look forward to what they can come with for the "Movement!" exhibition.

We wrapped up our week of apointments with Northside (Cincinnati) "outsider-art" gallery Thunder-Sky Inc. Through our casual conversations along the way, they've taken interest in proposing a container installation for the "Movement!" exhibition, so we  shared with them as much as we could ...as far as the show's structure is concerned. So now, we look forward to what they come up with as well.

Along the way, we were also introduced to a team of community problem solvers from Arts Wave, who were simply interested in hearing us out. So, of course we obliged. And while this was a bit of an impromptu interaction, we'd like to sincerely thank all who were involved and those who made it happen. We look forward to continuing our conversation.

...oh what a week.
